Researching Injectors

As a registered nurse with experience in aesthetics, I cannot stress the importance of researching your injectors before receiving any cosmetic treatments enough. A recent article from Women’s Health Magazine highlighted the stories of six women who had terrible experiences with fillers. These women all had to seek out a new injector or physician to correct the damage caused by their initial treatments.

Here is what to look for so you don’t end up in a chair of an unqualified or inexperienced injector.

  1. Look for a medical professional.  Lip filler, Botox, and micro-needling with PRP  is an aesthetic treatment, but it is slightly invasive and requires someone with a medical background. You don’t want to mess around with infections or other medical issues later on so this is a super important prerequisite. Don’t put your health and safety at risk for cheap work. Injectors should be registered nurses or doctors who understand how to use syringes, inject products, prevent infection and minimize bruising. If nothing else, do your research to make sure your injector is using only FDA-approved fillers, and equipment and not things bought off Amazon.  Never trust an injector who is reluctant to tell you the components or brand name of their filler products, the name of the equipment they are using, or where they get their products.

  1. Don’t Select an Injector Based on Price. If it seems too good to be true then it probably is! Neuromodulators, such as Botox, and dermal filler injections vary by price according to injector experience, skillset, location, and training. If injectables are priced too low, then you risk compromising the quality of your injections and results. While you want to ensure that you’re being treated fairly, you don’t want to select an injector simply based on price.

Cheaper isn’t better! There is likely a reason for below-market pricing – lower quality, less experience, inadequate training, or knowledge of anatomy. Don’t price-shop your face as there are very serious side effects and complications with fillers and neuromodulators that can happen. Make sure to have a “buyer beware” mindset and research the competitive market before selecting a provider. want great results, it is important to spend the money and choose a reputable injector.

  1. Prioritize experience and ask for referrals. Ask your injector how long they’ve been injecting. Don’t be too shy to ask for past client results, before and after pictures, and testimonials. If an injector is hesitant to offer these things, that is a huge red flag. If you’re searching the plastered walls of Instagram for an injector, make sure they have plenty of featured clients posted on their page. Before you book an appointment, scroll through the posts and consider screenshotting them to show your injector what you like and don’t like about your face. Looking for someone to work on your face is a lot like looking for an artist to paint a portrait. There are lots of different styles and techniques, each with its own merits and advantages.

When searching for an injector, it is essential to do your research beforehand. Here are some things to consider when finding the right injector for you:

Before Calling to Schedule:

  1. Do they have a website?

  2. Do they have before and after photos?

  3. Check their online presence on social media platforms.

  4. Do they have positive reviews?

When You Call to Schedule:

  1. How well are you prepared for your upcoming appointment?

  2. Ask about your injector's credentialing and certifications.

  3. How long have they been injecting?

At Your Consult:

  1. All risks involved with Botox and fillers should be reviewed.

  2. Post-care for Botox and filler should be reviewed.

  3. Medications should be reviewed.

It is critical to take your time when choosing an injector for your cosmetic treatments. Do not hesitate to seek out a new injector if you do not feel comfortable with a particular provider. Remember, this is your face, and you have the right to choose an injector who is experienced, qualified, and reputable.
